Capcom Uses AI to Generate Countless Unique In-Game Environment Ideas
In the ever-evolving world of video game development, Capcom is pushing the boundaries by integrating generative AI to streamline the creation of in-game environments. As costs continue to soar, game publishers are increasingly turning to AI tools to enhance efficiency and reduce expenses. For instance, Call of Duty reportedly sold an "AI-generated cosmetic" for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in late 2023, and there were accusations against Activision for using AI in a loading screen design. Meanwhile, EA has emphasized that AI is "the very core" of its business strategy.
In a recent interview with Google Cloud Japan, Kazuki Abe, a technical director at Capcom known for his work on blockbuster titles like Monster Hunter: World and Exoprimal, shed light on how the company is harnessing AI to revolutionize its game development process. Abe highlighted the challenge of generating "hundreds of thousands" of unique ideas, a task that is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. He pointed out that even items like televisions require distinctive designs, logos, and shapes, leading to a vast number of proposals for each game.
To address this, Abe developed a system that leverages generative AI to analyze game design documents and produce a multitude of ideas. This approach not only speeds up the development process but also allows the AI to refine its outputs through self-feedback. His prototype, which utilizes advanced AI models such as Google Gemini Pro, Gemini Flash, and Imagen, has garnered positive feedback from Capcom's internal teams. The implementation of this AI model promises significant cost reductions while simultaneously enhancing the quality of the in-game assets.
Currently, Capcom's use of AI is confined to this specific system, with other critical aspects of game development like ideation, gameplay, programming, and character design still being managed by human creatives. This strategic use of AI aims to complement rather than replace the human touch in game creation, ensuring that the essence of creativity remains intact while boosting productivity and efficiency.
