"Witcher 4 Faces Delays Due to Unreal Engine Issues"
Daniel Vavra, the creator of the Kingdom Come trilogy and a co-founder of Warhorse Studio, has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with Unreal Engine, particularly for its inability to handle complex and open-world environments. He attributes the development struggles of The Witcher 4 to this engine limitation. "Unreal Engine is fine if you're aiming to create a game filled with deserts and rocks, but it struggled with trees for a long time," Vavra claims. He further criticizes Unreal's Nanite technology, stating it falls short in rendering vegetation effectively.
Vavra has shared insights from a CD Projekt employee, indicating that scenes which functioned seamlessly on the RED Engine have been problematic on Unreal Engine, leading to significant production challenges. He questions CD Projekt's decision to switch to Unreal Engine when they had a robust engine like RED Engine at their disposal. Moreover, Vavra points out that while Unreal Engine can deliver stunning visuals, it demands high-end computers, often priced in the thousands of euros, which are beyond the reach of many gamers.
Despite these engine-related controversies, the excitement for the Kingdom Come series remains strong. The first installment, set in medieval Bohemia, captivated players years ago, and the anticipation for the sequel is palpable.
