Environmental Artist Saori Mizuno shared insights into the design philosophy behind Elden Ring Nightreign. In an interview with IGN on May 29, she explained how the game was intentionally crafted to feel similar to the original Elden Ring while introducing subtle shifts in tone and atmosphere.

“One specific direction we did get early on was to create something that at first feels and looks familiar and gradually transforms into the unfamiliar and into the unknown,” Mizuno stated.

The team took inspiration from Spirited Away, particularly its theme of being trapped in a surreal dreamlike world. This concept is reflected in the game’s environment—starting with beautiful, inviting landscapes that soon hint at something eerie lurking beneath the surface.

Producer Yasuhiro Kitao expressed his appreciation for players who have embraced Nightreign, acknowledging its unconventional design compared to previous FromSoftware titles.

“Nightreign has some peculiar aspects to its game design and is different from our recent titles in various ways. Nonetheless, many of you have bravely jumped into this world, and for that we're immensely grateful.”

Kitao also drew comparisons to earlier titles such as Demon’s Souls (2009) and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), where bold design changes surprised fans. He assured players that once they adapt to Nightreign's new mechanics, it offers a rewarding and distinct experience.
