Ubisoft Postponed Assassin's Creed Shadows Due to Technological Constraints
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Shadows, set in feudal Japan, faced significant delays before reaching development. The ambition to bring the franchise to Japan had been long-held, but technological limitations and narrative development prevented an earlier launch. Ubisoft prioritized achieving a high standard of both technology and storytelling, as Creative Director Jonathan Dumont explained in a recent interview. This cautious approach reflects the importance of Shadows following challenges with titles like Star Wars: Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. The multiple delays for Shadows aimed to refine gameplay, particularly parkour mechanics, and ensure a polished final product.
Despite considerable fan anticipation for a Japan-set Assassin's Creed game, Shadows' reception has been mixed. Concerns exist about potential similarities to previous installments like Odyssey and Valhalla. The dual protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, have also raised questions about the impact of player choices on the narrative. Ubisoft assures players that the game can be fully completed with either character, achieving 100% completion as both. However, the depth and divergence of their individual storylines remain to be seen. As the release date nears, Ubisoft must address fan concerns while delivering a compelling and innovative addition to the franchise.
Assassin's Creed: Shadows represents a crucial project for Ubisoft, a chance to reaffirm the series' quality and showcase the studio's dedication to innovation.
