Chess Embraces Digital Arena, Recognized as an Esport
Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup
The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) has made a surprising addition to its roster: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports in a groundbreaking move. Let's explore why this historic game is taking center stage in the world's largest gaming and esports festival.
Chess: A New Era in Esports Competition
A significant partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has brought competitive chess to the EWC for the first time. This collaboration aims to introduce the classic game to a broader, more mainstream audience.EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, referring to chess as "the mother of all strategy games." He believes its rich history, global appeal, and vibrant competitive scene make it a perfect addition to the EWC's mission of uniting popular games and their communities.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a wider audience. He stated, "This partnership offers an incredible opportunity to grow the game, introducing chess to new audiences and inspiring future generations of players."
Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown
The EWC will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025. Top chess players from around the world will compete for a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will battle for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC, marking chess's historic esports debut.
To engage a wider audience, particularly esports fans, the 2025 CCT will utilize a new format. Instead of the traditional 90-minute time control, matches will feature a 10-minute time limit with no increment. Tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.
With roots tracing back 1500 years to ancient India, chess has endured through centuries, becoming a globally popular pastime. The digital age, platforms like Chess.com, and the rise of esports have broadened the game's reach, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Media exposure through streaming, influencers, and shows like "The Queen's Gambit" have further amplified its popularity.
Now, with its official recognition as an esport, chess is poised for even greater growth and engagement.
