Avowed Director Aims to Expand the World They've Created
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
With Avowed achieving sales that have pleased both Microsoft and Obsidian, the future looks bright. In a recent Bloomberg interview on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for furthering the game's universe through expansions or a sequel.
While Obsidian has yet to announce any concrete plans, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing to direct within the franchise. She highlighted the appeal of building upon the rich world and the team's expertise, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Changes in Avowed During Development
The journey to Avowed's release was fraught with challenges and significant changes. Patel described the development process as messy but ultimately rewarding. Initially started in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian contemplated selling the company amidst the success of titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. Microsoft's acquisition in 2020 brought new direction, although it meant the team had to abandon several planned features, including multiplayer aspects.
In January 2021, a leadership change and game reboot occurred, with Patel taking the helm. She managed a team of over 80 during this transition, emphasizing a focus on the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise. The shift from an open world to open zones allowed for more detailed and engaging environments. Patel reflected on the process, saying, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian's Interest in Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed bringing renewed attention to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian is exploring new avenues. During a Twitch livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game titled Pillars: Tactics.
Sawyer mentioned the widespread interest in tactics games among the team, saying, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he noted the challenges in determining the game's scope, including team size, visual quality, and scale. Despite this, Sawyer remains committed to his vision for Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a budget comparable to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, set at $100 million, a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
