NetEase Strategic Business Shift Impacts North American Studios
Marvel Rivals US-Based Devs Laid Off by NetEase
On February 19, 2025, Thaddeus Sasser, the director of Marvel Rivals, announced via LinkedIn that he and other California-based developers had been let go by NetEase Games. Sasser expressed his confusion and disappointment, stating, "This is such a weird industry. My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games...and were just laid off!"
In the face of adversity, Sasser took to LinkedIn to advocate for his former team members, starting with Garry McGee, the game’s technical designer. He praised McGee's skills and dedication, saying, "During the course of the project, Garry was fantastic to work with. This is a highly technical designer - currently working in level design, but I've seen his passion project! - who is a proactive problem solver." Sasser emphasized McGee's value, adding, "If I had a role I'd hire him again instantly."
Sasser's commitment to helping his team find new opportunities reflects the resilience and community spirit often found within the gaming industry.
NetEase, Despite Its Success, Makes Controversial Moves in North America
Marvel Rivals was crafted by a collaborative effort between teams in China and Seattle, USA. While Sasser's team focused on game and level design, the Chinese team managed other aspects of development. However, their significant contributions did not shield them from the broader industry layoffs.
NetEase has remained silent on the reasons behind these layoffs, but a Bungie employee hinted at the company's possible withdrawal from North America. This move follows NetEase's decision to cut financial support to Worlds Untold studio in November 2024 and terminate its partnership with Jar of Sparks on January 7, 2025, leaving the latter to seek a new publishing partner.
Marvel Rivals Second Half of Season 1 Update
New Heroes, Maps, and More!
The second half of Marvel Rivals' Season 1 is set to launch with an exciting array of new heroes, maps, balance adjustments, and tournaments, as announced on the game's YouTube channel on February 19, 2025. This update, led by creative director Guangguang and lead combat designer Zhiyong, promises to elevate the gaming experience.
Fans can look forward to the official introduction of The Thing and Human Torch, completing the Fantastic Four lineup. Additionally, Central Park will debut as a new map, transformed into Dracula's haunting domain.
Zhiyong also unveiled significant balance adjustments effective after the first half of Season 1 concludes on February 21, 2025, at 12:00 AM (PDT). Notable changes include an increase in energy costs for characters with rapid ultimate recharge, such as Cloak & Dagger and Loki, to shake up the competitive scene. Some Vanguard characters like Doctor Strange and Magneto will see reduced survivability, while movement-type Vanguards will receive boosts. Meanwhile, overpowered heroes like Storm and Moon Knight are slated for nerfs as the game progresses into the second half of Season 1.
One anticipated change that won't make it into the update is the rank reset, which would have dropped all players' ranks by four divisions. Following fan feedback, the developers have decided to scrap this mechanic, much to the relief of the community. For more details on this decision, you can explore this related article.
