Top Pokémon Card Gainers and Losers: May 9 Weekly Update

Author : Emily Update : May 13,2025

Another week brings another rollercoaster of changes in the Pokémon single card market, with trainers eagerly awaiting the release of Destined Rivals. Thankfully, the preorders for Black Bolt and White Flare at the Pokémon Center were spared from the usual bot frenzy.

This week's most significant drop was the Greninja ex 214/167, which plummeted nearly 50% since the start of the year. We're also witnessing substantial price reductions across the Obsidian Flames and the elusive 151 expansions. On the flip side, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies has nearly doubled in value, a testament to its underappreciated artwork.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress with its dynamic depiction of a battle against Venusaur, gradually increasing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art is soaring, gaining an additional $100 in value since the beginning of the year. Let's delve deeper into the week's biggest Pokémon TCG risers and fallers.

Pokémon Card Crashes

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyWhile we're seeing a notable rise in Sword and Shield era Pokémon Cards, Scarlet and Violet series cards are settling back into more reasonable prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from the 151 set is a stunning card, now 34% cheaper than at the beginning of March. It's a must-have for any collector's binder this year.

Bulbasaur, my first starter Pokémon from Pokémon Blue, holds a special place in my heart. The Bulbasaur IR has seen a massive 52% drop since mid-March, making it an excellent opportunity to snag this beautiful card.

Moving to Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR remains one of the set's standout cards. With a 40% crash since February, it's now available for a reasonable $18.17.

The biggest crasher this month is Greninja ex SIR, which was once poised to be the priciest Scarlet and Violet era card. However, with the arrival of Prismatic Evolutions, the hype shifted. It's still a fantastic card at $275, but imagine paying $411.62 at the end of February!

Pokémon Card Climbers

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyTurning to this week's climbers, Rayquaza VMAX alt art remains a prized possession from the Sword and Shield era. Already over $500, it's now at $649.99 and showing no signs of slowing down. This could easily reach $1,000 in a few years, so grab one if you can.

For those who adore the Kanto region, Charizard V Alt Art delivers with its engaging battle scene against Venusaur. Its dynamic angle sets it apart from many static Pokémon cards. It has gained an additional $40 since January and could hit $200 before the year ends.

Pokémon Card Sealed Boosters

For those dedicated to pulling chase cards themselves, here's what's currently in stock. Be cautious of prices exceeding MSRP; it's a strange time for Pokémon trainers, so avoid overpaying.
