Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently shared fascinating insights into his early career, including his experience with the legendary Nintendo PlayStation prototype. In an interview with MinnMax, Yoshida recounted his journey at Sony, starting with his work alongside Ken Kutaragi, the visionary behind the original PlayStation. Joining Kutaragi's team in February 1993, Yoshida was among the first to see the Nintendo PlayStation prototype in action.

Yoshida revealed, "Everybody who joined [Ken Kutaragi]'s team around that time, the first thing they showed us was that Nintendo Sony PlayStation, like a prototype already working. And also they had almost finished a game on it. And I got to play the game on the system, the day I joined."

The game itself, he described, resembled a space shooter reminiscent of Sega CD's Silpheed, utilizing streaming assets from a CD. While Yoshida couldn't recall the developer's identity or the game's origin (U.S. or Japan), he expressed optimism about its potential survival. "I wouldn't be surprised," he stated, "You know, it was like a CD, so… yeah."

The Nintendo PlayStation remains a highly coveted artifact, a testament to a potential partnership that never materialized. Its unreleased status and the allure of a lost piece of gaming history have fueled its popularity in auctions and collector circles.

The possibility of this Sony-developed space shooter resurfacing is intriguing. Considering Nintendo's eventual release of Star Fox 2 years after its cancellation, the prospect of this lost game seeing the light of day isn't entirely improbable.
