Play Games in Portrait Mode with New Tate Mode Mini Controller!

If you’re a gamer, you've likely experienced the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone in landscape mode. A modder named Max Kern has introduced a novel solution: the Tate Mode mini controller, designed specifically for portrait-mode gaming. But does it truly address the problem?

Traditional controllers are typically designed for landscape mode, similar to those used on devices like the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, classic vertical shooters and retro games often require holding your phone in portrait mode, akin to scrolling through Instagram.

Max Kern's innovative approach involves a compact USB-C gamepad tailored for Tate mode. This controller connects directly to your phone’s USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or extra batteries. The design incorporates a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the case and buttons crafted through 3D printing by JLCPCB. Enthusiasts can even follow Max’s detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel to build their own.

The Tate Mode mini controller leverages the GP2040-CE firmware, functioning as a standard HID controller compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac, showcasing impressive versatility in such a small package.

However, there are concerns about the physical strain this setup might place on the USB-C port, as the gamepad partially supports the phone's weight. Users would need to hold both the phone and the controller to prevent potential damage to the connector over time.

Feedback on Reddit is mixed, with some users expressing concerns over possible hand cramps and discomfort, while others are more receptive to the concept. It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY project. Max has generously shared all necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github, inviting the community to experiment and provide feedback.
