Exploring Retro Gaming on the Nintendo Switch: GBA & DS Gems

This article takes a slightly different approach to showcasing retro games on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike some other platforms, the Switch doesn't boast a huge library of dedicated Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports. Therefore, this list combines titles available both through the Nintendo Switch Online app and the Switch eShop, featuring ten favorites—four GBA and six DS games. No particular ranking is implied. Let's dive in!

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original might hold an edge for some, this GBA version offers a compelling alternative. A fun comparison piece, and arguably a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of which version you choose, even appealing to those not typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, a worthy successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry shows some minor rough edges that are later refined. Nevertheless, it's the perfect starting point for this fantastic franchise.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, but justified by its significant difference from Mega Man Zero. Mega Man Battle Network is a unique RPG with a blend of action and strategic elements. The virtual world concept within electronic devices is clever and well-executed. While later installments saw diminishing returns, the original offers a highly enjoyable experience.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it's even preferable to the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the addictive gameplay makes the grinding worthwhile. A unique setting and hidden secrets complete this exceptional package. A top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hampered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge’s DSiWare release broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae as a console mainstay. Its roots in an unreleased GBA game add to its unique charm, a game that will soon see its own release.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Technically a GBA game (its origin), but not localized then, Ace Attorney is a must-play. These engaging adventure games combine investigation with dramatic courtroom scenes, blending witty humor and compelling narratives. The first game is exceptional, though later entries also hold their own.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick shares the strong writing but boasts unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while unraveling the mystery of your death. A captivating experience that deserves more recognition.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

The World Ends With You is a top-tier Nintendo DS game, ideally experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional title in every aspect.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the updated button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three are worthy of your time.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, Atlus successfully adapted Etrian Odyssey III. Each game in the series stands alone, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding adventure despite its quirks.
