Each 100-card deck features a mix of reprints with new Final Fantasy art and brand-new cards designed for Commander play. The design team at Wizards of the Coast (WotC) carefully selected these four games, balancing gameplay considerations with the popularity and richness of each storyline. While Final Fantasy VII and XIV were easier choices, VI and X required more deliberation, ultimately selected due to their popularity within the development team.

The Final Fantasy VII deck cleverly blends the original game's narrative with the aesthetic enhancements of the Remake trilogy. The artwork reflects this fusion, offering a nostalgic yet visually updated experience.

Final Fantasy VI, with its pixel art origins, presented a unique challenge. WotC collaborated directly with the FFVI team to faithfully recreate the characters in a style suitable for Magic cards, drawing inspiration from Yoshitaka Amano's concept art, original sprites, and the Pixel Remaster.

Commander deck leaders were also carefully chosen. While Cloud was a natural fit for FFVII, other choices involved extensive brainstorming. The team ultimately opted for the main protagonists, though the MMO nature of FFXIV led to selecting Y'shtola during her Shadowbringers arc, offering a rich source of abilities and story moments.

Each deck's color identity and gameplay were carefully crafted to reflect the chosen game's themes. All four decks incorporate White, facilitating the inclusion of a wide array of heroes. FFVI focuses on graveyard recursion, FFVII incorporates equipment and "power matters" strategies, FFX utilizes the Sphere Grid system to empower creatures, and FFXIV leans into non-creature spellcasting.

Beyond the main characters, each deck features many beloved supporting characters, both heroes and villains, as legendary creatures and in spell effects.

The Final Fantasy set launches June 13th, and while these four decks represent a fantastic starting point, WotC assures fans that all sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games will be represented across the entire product line. Both regular ($69.99 MSRP) and Collector's Edition ($149.99 MSRP) versions of each deck will be available, with the latter featuring Surge foil treatment on all 100 cards.
