Mastering Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake: Essential Tips for Beginners

For fans of classic JRPGs, Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake is a nostalgic trip back to the series' roots. However, its old-school difficulty requires strategic planning. Here are some key tips to aid your quest to defeat Baramos.

Navigate the Personality Test Wisely

At the game's outset, you'll encounter "She Who Watches Over All," who will administer a personality test. This seemingly minor step significantly impacts your Hero's stat growth. While you can alter personality later with specific accessories, restarting for your desired traits is simpler. For optimal stat boosts, creating a female Hero to achieve the "Vamp" personality is recommended.

Customize Your Party for Success

In Aliahan, visit Patty's Party Planning Place. However, bypass Patty's pre-set teams. On the second floor, speak with the counter attendant to create a custom party with classes Patty doesn't offer. This allows stat allocation and personality adjustments, creating stronger party members than those on the first floor. Crucially, always include a Priest for essential healing magic.

Acquire Powerful Early-Game Weapons

Early-game equipment can be costly, so securing strong weapons is vital. Seek out the Boomerang (found in Dreamer's Tower, third floor, inside a chest) and the Thorn Whip (obtained in Aliahan's well by giving Morgan Minimann two Mini Medals). Four Mini Medals are readily available early on (two in Aliahan, two in Dreamer's Tower). These weapons' multi-enemy attack capabilities make them incredibly effective, particularly when equipped by your Hero and a strength-focused character (Warrior or Martial Artist).

Master Party Control with "Follow Orders"

While often overlooked, direct party control isn't always a given in RPGs. In Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake, utilize the Tactics menu during combat to switch your party's behavior to "Follow Orders." This seemingly small detail grants crucial control over your party's actions during intense battles.

Stock Up on Chimaera Wings

Early encounters can inflict significant damage if you're unprepared. Fast travel is unavailable until the Zoom spell is unlocked (likely around level 8). Until then, keep Chimaera Wings on hand for quick travel to previously visited locations, even within dungeons. At only 25 gold each, they prevent wasted time and potential party wipes.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
