Capcom's recent update to its iOS and iPadOS ports of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village has introduced a controversial change: mandatory online DRM. While updates often improve optimization or compatibility, this update requires an internet connection to verify game ownership upon launch. This means offline play is no longer possible. The game will check your purchase history, and if you decline verification, the game closes. While the process is quick with a connection, the inability to play offline is a significant drawback for many players.

Before this update, all three games functioned perfectly offline. This mandatory online check is a negative change to previously purchased games. While some may not mind, the forced online component diminishes the value of these premium-priced ports. Hopefully, Capcom will reconsider this approach or implement a less intrusive verification method. This update makes recommending these games more difficult.

The games remain free to try. You can download Resident Evil 7 biohazard here, Resident Evil 4 Remake here, and Resident Evil Village here. My reviews are available here, here, and here.
