Capcom Explores Open-World and Online Concepts for Resident Evil: Requiem Before Refocusing on Horror Roots

Capcom revealed it initially explored making Resident Evil: Requiem an open-world game with online features before shifting direction.

In a candid developer diary video, Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi shared glimpses of this scrapped version, showcasing multiple protagonists in intense, action-packed gunfights.

Ultimately, Capcom abandoned these ideas to return to the Resident Evil series’ core horror essence, its developers explained. Set for release next year, Requiem will be a single-player, offline experience.

"We’ve packed a lot into this title. Early on, we explored various systems," producer Masachika Kawata shared.

"You may have caught wind of some rumors," Nakanishi added. "We tested concepts like an online Resident Evil or an open-world format for a while.

"But ultimately, those ideas didn’t align with what fans expect. So, we went back to basics, crafting what became Resident Evil: Requiem."

Art director Tomonori Takano discussed Requiem’s setting, explaining Capcom chose urban environments to distinguish it from recent entries.

Unlike Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village, and the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which take place in rural settings, Requiem will revisit Raccoon City.

"Past titles leaned heavily on natural, rural backdrops," Takano said. "This time, we’re focusing on urban settings, with modern dramatic scenarios, including Raccoon City."

While Requiem’s single-player focus and setting are confirmed, Capcom remains tight-lipped about whether fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy will be playable alongside the announced protagonist, FBI agent Grace Ashcroft.

During the Capcom Spotlight 2025 broadcast, Nakanishi hinted that Leon might not suit the game’s horror tone but avoided ruling out his appearance entirely. Fans speculate Capcom is holding back reveals of Requiem’s more action-oriented sequences, where Leon could shine.
