Batman Arkham Sequel Art Features Grizzled Bruce Wayne

Concept art from a long-canceled Batman Arkham Knight sequel starring Damian Wayne as the Dark Knight has emerged online, giving us the clearest look yet at an older Bruce Wayne.

Known internally as Project Sabbath, the game was in development at Warner Bros. Games Montreal—the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins—following the release of 2015's Arkham Knight. It was set to feature two Batmen: father and son.

Ultimately, Warner Bros. canceled the project, and WB Games Montreal shifted its focus to 2022's Gotham Knights, which received a lukewarm reception and featured no version of Batman.

At the time, Project Sabbath was intended as Warner Bros.' next major Batman title, while Rocksteady explored concepts with other characters. Rocksteady later returned to its own version of Batman—in a way—with its ill-fated release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Recent images shared by a former WB Games Montreal artist on ArtStation showcase a youthful Damian Wayne, a grizzled and bearded Bruce Wayne, as well as concept designs for Killer Croc and Huntress.

It has never been confirmed whether the game would have been part of the official Arkham series canon. Some designs—particularly a noticeably different Killer Croc—suggest it might have been a fresh take. However, a similar argument could be made for Poison Ivy’s appearance in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is definitely part of the Arkham universe. WB Games Montreal also developed Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel considered canonical to Rocksteady's main trilogy.

This isn't the first time concept art from the game has appeared online. Back in 2021, another former WB Games Montreal developer posted images of Damian Wayne in his Batsuit—a sleek design with a red Bat-Signal emblazoned across the chest.

Those designs also featured the same older, bearded Bruce Wayne, though only in his suit—meaning his face was not visible at the time. The concepts suggest that, at some point in the story, the retired Bruce would have returned to action as Batman.

After the release of Gotham Knights and providing additional development support on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, WB Games Montreal underwent downsizing in December 2024, resulting in nearly 100 job losses. Rocksteady's co-op game featuring Batman's allies was a commercial failure, though the studio is reportedly now working on a new single-player Batman title.

Perhaps this upcoming project will finally deliver the Bruce and Damian Wayne game fans have long hoped for.
