Tencent Acquires Majority Stake in Kuro Games, Expanding Influence in Global Gaming
Tencent, a leading Chinese technology company, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.
Tencent's Increased Investment
Tencent now holds approximately 51.4% of Kuro Games' shares, surpassing the previous 37% stake. This follows a 2023 investment and the departure of other shareholders, leaving Tencent as the sole external investor.
Maintaining Independence
Despite this controlling interest, Kuro Games assures continued operational independence. The company cites a desire for a more stable environment to support its long-term growth strategy, echoing Tencent's approach with other successful studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Tencent has yet to publicly confirm the acquisition.
Kuro Games' Success
Kuro Games has achieved notable success with Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue and receiving ongoing updates. The latter's recognition with a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards further underscores the studio's accomplishments. This acquisition positions Kuro Games for continued growth under Tencent's umbrella.
