T-1000 Gameplay in Mortal Kombat 1 Echoes Terminator 2, Surprise Kameo DLC Revealed
NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat 1, has unveiled the first gameplay footage for the highly anticipated DLC guest character, the T-1000, and announced Madam Bo as a new DLC Kameo fighter.
The T-1000's gameplay is a nostalgic nod to the iconic Terminator 2, featuring attacks that echo the film's memorable moments, such as the use of blade and hook arms. Fans might notice similarities with the moves of Mortal Kombat characters Baraka and Kabal, and even a liquid metal transformation reminiscent of Glacius from Killer Instinct. The T-1000 is voiced by Robert Patrick, who reprised his role from the 1991 film, adding authenticity to the character. In a thrilling clash with Johnny Cage, Patrick's voice work is showcased, culminating in a Fatality that recreates the intense truck chase scene from Terminator 2, with the T-1000 emerging from the vehicle to deliver a lethal barrage of gunfire.
In a surprising reveal, NetherRealm also introduced Madam Bo as a DLC Kameo fighter. Known from the base story of Mortal Kombat 1 as a resilient elderly restaurant owner who stands up to Smoke and his goons, Madam Bo's gameplay is teased alongside the T-1000's showcase, highlighting her assist capabilities.
The T-1000 will be available in Mortal Kombat 1 starting March 18 during the early access period for Khaos Reigns owners, with general availability following on March 25. Madam Bo will be accessible on March 18 as a free content update for Khaos Reigns owners or as a standalone purchase.
As the final DLC character of the Khaos Reigns expansion, the T-1000 joins the roster following the addition of Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Speculation persists among fans about the possibility of a Kombat Pack 3, given the success and ongoing support of Mortal Kombat 1. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, remains committed to the franchise, with CEO David Zaslav affirming plans to focus on Mortal Kombat as one of their key titles.
Ed Boon, the development chief at NetherRealm, has assured fans of continued support for Mortal Kombat 1, despite having chosen the studio's next project three years prior. Although not confirmed, many anticipate that this could be a third installment in the Injustice series, following the releases of Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013 and Injustice 2 in 2017. The shift from Mortal Kombat 11 to Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023, using the newer Unreal Engine 4 instead of Unreal Engine 3, was influenced by factors including the COVID-19 pandemic and the desire to ensure team safety. Boon has expressed hope to return to the Injustice franchise, leaving the door open for future developments in that series.
