Stardew Valley: Everything You Need To Know About Preserves Jars

Author : Eric Update : Mar 05,2025

This Stardew Valley guide details Preserves Jars, a crucial tool for maximizing profits from crops and foraged goods. While Kegs and Jelly production often dominate late-game strategies, Preserves Jars offer an early-game advantage and remain valuable throughout.

Acquiring Preserves Jars:

The Preserves Jar recipe unlocks at Farming Level 4, requiring 50 Wood, 40 Stone, and 8 Coal. These materials are readily available early in the game. You also receive one for completing the Quality Crops Bundle (or Rare Crops Bundle in the remixed version) in the Community Center, and they may appear in the Prize Machine.

Artisan Goods Production:

Preserves Jars transform various items into higher-value artisan goods:

Jelly Jelly: Created from fruits. Edible fruits yield double the base energy and health; inedible fruits provide a portion of their base value as health and energy. Sell price is double the base fruit value plus 50g.

Pickles Pickles: Made from vegetables, mushrooms, and forageables (only those with positive energy value when consumed). Edible items yield 1.75x base energy and health; inedible items provide a portion of their base value as energy and health. Sell price is double the base item value plus 50g.

Caviar Caviar: Made from Sturgeon Roe. High sell price (500g) and significant health and energy restoration.

Aged Roe Aged Roe: Made from any other fish roe. Sell price is 60g plus the base fish price.

Artisan Profession Bonus: Selecting the Artisan profession at Farming Level 10 increases the sell price of all Preserves Jar products by 40%.

Preserves Jars vs. Kegs:

Both produce artisan goods, but Preserves Jars are more profitable for low-value fruits (under 50g) and vegetables/forage (under 160g). They also process much faster. Preserves Jars are essential for processing fish roe and mushrooms, which cannot be used in Kegs.

Keg vs Preserves Jar

High-yield, low-value crops like eggplants, wild berries, corn, and tomatoes are ideal for Preserves Jars. Prioritize using lower-quality produce to maximize profit margins, as quality doesn't affect the final sell price. The 1.6 update significantly expanded the range of forageables usable in Preserves Jars, from dandelions to purple mushrooms. This makes them even more valuable for players focusing on foraging.
