Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

Author : Eric Update : Apr 03,2025

Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to the layoff of an unspecified number of employees involved in the project. This information was initially reported by Insider Gaming, referencing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned their involvement in the project for the past year and their subsequent job search.

IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project. The project was developed by a team that had previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, a source described the number as "small." Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.

This development is part of a broader trend of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. That year saw the elimination of 50 jobs at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. Almost a year later, EA laid off 670 employees across the company and canceled multiple projects, including the Star Wars FPS, resulting in about two dozen job losses at Respawn. Following these cuts, BioWare underwent restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other internal projects and additional layoffs occurring.

IGN has sought comment from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
