Creating an Anvil

Anvils are essential for item repair. Crafting one requires 4 iron ingots and 3 iron blocks (a total of 31 ingots!), demanding significant iron ore smelting beforehand. Use the crafting table recipe below:

Anvil Functionality
The anvil's crafting menu has three slots; only two can be occupied at once. Place two identical, low-durability tools to create a new, fully repaired one. Alternatively, combine a damaged tool with crafting materials to repair it.

Repairing consumes experience points; higher durability restoration costs more XP. Note that some items, especially enchanted ones, have specific repair requirements.
Repairing Enchanted Items
Repairing enchanted items is similar to repairing regular ones, but requires more experience and higher-level enchanted items or enchanted books. Combining two enchanted items can yield a higher-level, fully repaired item, combining their enchantments and durability. The outcome isn't guaranteed, and the cost varies depending on item placement – experimentation is key!

Enchanted books can also be used in place of a second enchanted item to improve enchantments.
Anvil Limitations
Anvils themselves have durability and will eventually break. They cannot repair scrolls, books, bows, chainmail, and other items.

Repairing Items Without an Anvil
Minecraft's versatility extends to item repair; anvils aren't always necessary. A crafting table or grindstone can be used to combine identical items, increasing their durability.

This is a convenient alternative, especially during long journeys. Experimentation may reveal even more unconventional repair methods.
