Marvel Rivals Modding Bans Persist
Despite a Season 1 crackdown, Marvel Rivals players continue to risk account bans by using mods. Since the game's December launch, custom skins created via mods have been popular, transforming characters like Iron Man into Vegeta and Mantis into a goth. One mod even turns Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita.
NetEase, the developer, implemented asset hash checking to restrict mods, reiterating that their terms of service prohibit mods, cheats, and other unauthorized third-party software. They warned players of potential bans, stating that modifying game files is risky.
However, a workaround is now circulating online, requiring more steps but remaining accessible to many PC players. Modder Prafit, who shared a workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users about potential bans, noting that while NetEase hasn't issued permanent bans yet, the risk remains.
New mods featuring the Fantastic Four characters have emerged, such as one transforming Mister Fantastic into Luffy. This mod alone boasts over 5,000 downloads within two days of release, according to Nexus Mods.
The question of whether NetEase will follow through on its ban threats remains. While no confirmed ban cases for mod usage exist yet, the workaround's prevalence could trigger further action.
NetEase's motivation for banning mods likely stems from potential revenue loss from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, and the impact mods might have on gameplay balance and game performance. Prafit even suggests their workaround is only suitable for high-spec PCs.
