Larian Shifts Focus to Next Game, Imposes 'Media Blackout' for BG3

Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next project, initiating a self-imposed media silence.

While Baldur's Gate 3 players eagerly await Patch 8 later this year, Larian's leadership has confirmed their undivided attention is now dedicated to a new, unannounced title. Swen Vincke, Larian's head, recently acknowledged the studio's remarkable success with Baldur's Gate 3 on Twitter, hinting at future endeavors but also signaling a period of reduced public communication.

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian explicitly stated that the team's full concentration is on developing their next game, a move accompanied by a deliberate media blackout.

Details regarding this new project remain scarce. What is known is that it will not be a Baldur's Gate sequel, nor will it be another Dungeons & Dragons adaptation. Instead, Larian is venturing into uncharted territory with an entirely original creation, a decision made after internal assessments revealed a lack of enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate continuation.

Previous statements by Vincke offer only vague clues. In November 2023, he alluded to the next project's boundary-pushing ambition. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the eventual development of a new Divinity: Original Sin game, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the studio's immediate priority.

The nature of Larian's next game remains a mystery. Given their established expertise in fantasy RPGs, a departure into science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a completely different genre is within the realm of possibility.

The wait for concrete information about Larian's next venture is expected to be considerable, potentially spanning several years.
