Despite its lower resolution, the Hori Piranha Plant camera, which is officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a more affordable price than Nintendo’s own $49.99 camera. Additionally, the versatility of the Switch 2 allows users to connect any compatible USB-C camera, expanding the options for gamers. Both the Nintendo and Hori cameras are scheduled for release alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.
The Piranha Plant camera offers unique functionality; the webcam housing can detach from its pot, allowing users to place it directly on top of the Switch 2. This feature enhances portability, something that Nintendo's camera does not offer. Users can also close the plant's mouth to cover the lens, adding a playful touch to the device.
The announcement of the Piranha Plant camera's 480p resolution caused quite a stir among Nintendo fans. Many expressed disbelief and humor on social media platforms. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" questioned redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost added, "That’s actually hilarious. Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Another user, pokemonfitness1420, quipped, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"
During the recent Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the Switch 2's GameChat functionality, activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature enables players to watch and interact with each other across various games, using the camera to enhance the multiplayer experience. The built-in microphone ensures reliable communication across different gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is poised to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most impactful online initiative in years.
