Devil May Cry Remake Will Not Be Made Like 24 Years Ago
The trend of remaking classic games has captured the attention of legendary developers, with successful remakes of titles like Final Fantasy VII, Silent Hill 2, and Resident Evil 4. Now, the original Devil May Cry (DMC) could join this prestigious list, as its director, Hideki Kamiya, has shown keen interest in revisiting the game.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel on May 8, Kamiya engaged with fans, addressing questions about remakes and sequels. When a fan inquired about his ideas for a DMC remake, Kamiya enthusiastically responded, "A remake like that, well, I would like to do that."
First Released 2001
Devil May Cry first hit the shelves in 2001, initially conceived as Resident Evil 4. However, the project evolved significantly, leading Capcom to transform it into the unique action game that became DMC.
Reflecting on the game's origins nearly 25 years later, Kamiya shared a personal anecdote about its creation. He revealed that in 2000, he was going through a painful breakup, which deeply influenced his work on DMC. This emotional turmoil fueled the game's intense and dramatic atmosphere.
Kamiya admitted that he never replays his games after their release, including DMC. Yet, when he occasionally watches gameplay clips, he is reminded of how the game's design reflects its age. If he were to undertake a remake, Kamiya emphasized that he would build it entirely from the ground up, leveraging modern technology and contemporary game design principles.
While Kamiya isn't actively contemplating the project at the moment, he stated that he would only start developing ideas if the project were to become a reality. He confidently told Capcom, "But if the time comes— I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do."
In addition to DMC, Kamiya also expressed interest in remaking Viewtiful Joe. These announcements have sparked excitement among fans, who are now eagerly anticipating the potential return of these beloved titles in the form of modern remakes.
