Hyper Light Breaker, the highly anticipated sequel to the indie hit Hyper Light Drifter, significantly departs from its predecessor's formula. Trading its 2D pixel art for a stunning 3D world (without sacrificing visual appeal), it blends rogue-lite gameplay with extraction mechanics, and importantly, adds multiplayer functionality.

Cooperative play is a central feature, enhancing the experience and making challenges more manageable or rewarding with a fellow Breaker at your side. This guide details how to play with friends and how to utilize the online matchmaking system for random public groups.

How To Play Hyper Light Breaker With Friends

To enjoy cooperative multiplayer with friends, you'll need to create a private multiplayer room. Once you spawn in the Cursed Outpost, the game's central hub, approach the counter to the left of your commander, Pherus Bit.

Press the Interact button (usually R1 or RB) at the counter to access the Multiplayer menu. Here, you can create or join a Breaker Team, and manage invitations. To play with friends, select "Create Breaker Team."

In the subsequent menu, enable "Password Required" and set a password. After creating your private team, invite up to two friends using your platform's social features (PSN, Xbox, and Steam are supported). The game supports groups of three.

If your friend is already in-game, the invitation will appear in the "Invitations" tab of the Multiplayer menu. Otherwise, they can join using the invitation link.

Your team might also appear in the "Join Breaker Team" menu's general listing. If other methods fail, your friend can search this list and join directly.

Once your friend accepts, ensure they know the password, and prepare for some cooperative Hyper Light Breaker action!

Random Online Matchmaking In Hyper Light Breaker

If you lack friends who own Hyper Light Breaker but still want to play multiplayer, the game provides public group creation and random matchmaking. Create your own public group (without a password) or join a random one.

In the Cursed Outpost's Multiplayer menu, select "Join Breaker Team," then scroll down and choose "Join Random Public Breaker Team."

The game will search for available public, password-free teams and assign you to one (if available). After a short loading screen, you'll join the team's world.

To leave a multiplayer session, return to the Cursed Outpost counter, open the Multiplayer menu, and select the "Disconnect" option (which appears only when in a session). Alternatively, simply quit the game.
