"Guide: Defeating and Capturing Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds"
In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, the beasts you encounter are not only ferocious but also incredibly memorable. Among them, Rompopolo stands out as a unique Brute Wyvern that you'll need to conquer. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to unlock, defeat, and capture this intriguing monster.
How to Unlock Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
You'll first encounter Rompopolo in Chapter 2, during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. As you journey through the Oilwell Basin region on your way to Azuz City, Rompopolo will make its dramatic appearance. Defeating it is essential to progress further in the game.
Once you've defeated Rompopolo at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage in battles with it repeatedly by either exploring the Oilwell Basin or by starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.
How to Beat and Capture Rompopolo in Monster Hunter Wilds
To prepare effectively for this encounter, arm your hunter with water-element weapons, which can be obtained from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, ensure your gear is equipped with fire resistance, which can be farmed from Uth Duna or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general defense charm like the Defense Charm I. Before heading out, don't forget to boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses
Rompopolo is a unique wyvern with a bipedal form and saggy skin that inflates with gas, enabling various gas-related attacks that can cause explosions. Be cautious as it can also inflict poison status ailments, so carry Antidotes and rely on your Palico to help cleanse ailments when possible.
Here are the key attacks to watch out for:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo uses its clawed arms to swipe forward twice. This attack is easy to dodge due to its limited range.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – It charges forward while raising both arms to perform an arcing swipe attack.
- Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail toward its target in another physical attack.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – It sprays a stream of poison gas or charges forward while swinging its head back and forth, spraying poison.
- Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing eruptions. Dodge these explosions to avoid damage.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, it curls its tail underneath to pump more gas into the oil, causing a larger explosion. Dodge this to minimize damage.
Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?
In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, you have the option to either kill or capture Rompopolo at the end of the battle. To capture it, you must weaken the monster until your Palico indicates it's "tired" (nearly dead). Then, use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out, completing the capture.
Both methods are viable, but they yield different item rewards. While the exact differences are still being confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Rompopolo:
