"Ex-PlayStation President Reacts to Nintendo Switch 2: 'Expected More'"

Author : Nova Update : Apr 25,2025

Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida recently shared his candid thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2's reveal during an interview with Easy Allies. His response highlighted a mix of admiration and disappointment, focusing on what he perceives as a shift in Nintendo's approach to innovation.

Yoshida expressed his belief that Nintendo might be losing its unique identity, known for creating new and exciting experiences by designing hardware and games in tandem. He noted that the Switch 2, while an improved version of the original with a larger screen, more powerful processor, higher resolution, and support for 4K and 120 fps, essentially follows a path that other companies have long taken—enhancing existing technology rather than pioneering new experiences.

He acknowledged the appeal of the Switch 2 for those who primarily game on Nintendo platforms, citing the ability to play games like Elden Ring that were previously unavailable on Nintendo systems. However, he felt the excitement might be less for gamers who already have access to these titles on other platforms.

Yoshida pointed out that the reveal event, watched by millions, featured many ports from past generations, which he found somewhat underwhelming. He did, however, express enthusiasm for a few new titles announced, such as "Enter the Gungeon 2" and "Drag x Drive," the latter of which he described as "very Nintendo."

The discussion also touched on the system's pricing and the differences in pricing between Japan and the rest of the world. Yoshida appreciated certain innovative features like camera and mouse controls, which he felt showcased Nintendo's playful and innovative spirit. Nevertheless, he concluded that he was personally disappointed because the Switch 2 did not surprise everyone as much as he had hoped.

Yoshida acknowledged the Switch 2 as a solid business decision, likely crafted by talented designers, but felt it played it safe, possibly at the expense of the quirky and unexpected elements that many fans associate with Nintendo.

While Yoshida discussed the Switch 2's pricing in the interview, the exact cost in the U.S. remains undisclosed. Nintendo has paused North American pre-orders due to new tariffs announced on the same day as the system's reveal. With the global launch set for June 5, Nintendo has a tight deadline to resolve these issues before the release.
