BO6 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Crossover Disappoints Fans Due to Exorbitant Prices
Black Ops 6's TMNT Crossover Sparks Player Outrage Over Pricing
Activision's latest Black Ops 6 crossover event, featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) as part of Season 2 Reloaded, has ignited a firestorm of criticism from players due to its exorbitant pricing. The outrage centers on the cost of unlocking the playable characters.
Individual TMNT skins – Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello – each command a $20 price tag. Master Splinter is available for $10 via the Premium Battle Pass track. Acquiring the entire set, along with a $10 TMNT-themed weapon blueprint, totals a staggering $100. This has prompted significant backlash, particularly given Black Ops 6's $69.99 price point.
The community is expressing frustration at the perceived greed, with comparisons drawn to free-to-play titles like Fortnite where similar bundles are significantly cheaper. Reddit user neverclaimsurv commented, "That is INSANE...In Fortnite I think I paid $25.00 for all 4 turtles, and that’s a free game."
Adding fuel to the fire is the likelihood that these purchased skins will not carry over to future Black Ops installments. This limited-time nature of the cosmetic purchases further exacerbates the perceived value proposition. Reddit user SellMeYourSirin points out, "It has everything to do with the fact a full price game (that’s likely gonna be replaced within the next year) has THREE tiers of battle passes."
Despite the controversy, Black Ops 6 remains a top-grossing title. While Activision is unlikely to alter its monetization strategy without substantial player pressure, the negative reception is undeniable.
Black Ops 6's Troubled Steam Reviews
Black Ops 6 currently boasts a "Mixed" rating on Steam, with only 47% of 10,696 user reviews recommending the game. Beyond the pricing issues, players cite numerous problems including game-crashing bugs, rampant hacking in multiplayer, and concerns over Activision's increasing reliance on AI.
Steam user LemonRain sums up the experience: "this game has had problems with hard crashing since launch, but the latest update has made it so I can’t complete a single match. Reinstalling. Safe mode. Support. Nothing works and I have given up."
Reports of pervasive hacking, where players are instantly eliminated before matches even begin, are also prevalent. One user described waiting 15 minutes in a lobby only to encounter hackers.
In a unique form of protest against Activision's AI-driven development, some users are even using AI chatbots like ChatGPT to generate negative Steam reviews, highlighting the depth of player dissatisfaction.
Despite the overwhelmingly negative feedback, Black Ops 6 continues to generate substantial revenue through its costly battle passes, leaving the future of its monetization strategy uncertain.
