Black Myth: Wukong Successor 'Zhong Kui' Unveiled at Gamescom Closing
The gaming world was stunned when Chinese developer Game Science revealed Black Myth: Zhong Kui during the closing moments of Gamescom 2025's Opening Night Live. This spiritual successor follows their massively successful Black Myth: Wukong.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui Continues the Mythological Saga
Surprise Final Reveal
As Gamescom's Opening Night Live reached its conclusion, host Geoff Keighley dropped the bombshell announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui, marking Game Science's ambitious follow-up to their breakout hit.
Black Myth: Wukong achieved unprecedented success upon release, selling over 10 million copies in its first three days. Industry tracker VGInsights reports the action-RPG has now surpassed 20 million units sold with $978 million in total revenue.
Rather than creating a direct sequel to Wukong's journey, Game Science selected Zhong Kui - another iconic figure from Chinese mythology - as their next protagonist to deliver a fresh gameplay experience while maintaining the series' signature aesthetic.
The Legendary Demon Queller

Keighley introduced Zhong Kui as "the ghost-hunting deity who traverses between the mortal realm and the underworld." According to historical records from the National Museum of Asian Art, Zhong Kui's legend originated in 8th century China when Emperor Xuanzong was cured of illness after dreaming of a disfigured warrior defeating a demon.
This spectral protector identified himself as Zhong Kui, claiming to be the spirit of a scholar wronged in life but remaining loyal to the empire. The emperor later commissioned portraits of Zhong Kui that became widespread talismans against evil spirits, often depicting him riding a donkey accompanied by conquered demons carrying his possessions.
Development Status

While the protagonist choice has been finalized, Game Science clarified on their official FAQ that Zhong Kui remains in the earliest development phases, jokingly describing the project as currently consisting of "little more than an empty folder." The team couldn't share any gameplay footage or narrative details yet.
The developers explained their August 20th announcement aligns with their tradition of major updates on this date. Black Myth: Wukong was first revealed on August 20, 2020, launched August 20, 2024, and saw its Xbox Series X|S version released alongside the Zhong Kui reveal on August 20, 2025.

"Our team is electrified with creative energy," Game Science stated. "We're driven to craft compelling new stories while expanding gameplay possibilities - creating something that feels familiar yet surprising for Wukong veterans."
The single-player action-RPG will release on PC and all major console platforms. More details about platform availability and release timing will be shared in future updates.
