About Devarattam

Devarattam is a traditional folk dance rooted in the spiritual and cultural fabric of Tamil Nadu. Historically performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, it is a living expression of devotion, rhythm, and ancestral storytelling.

The dance comprises 32 foundational steps, with additional variations extending the repertoire to up to 72 movements. These steps are performed with precision and grace, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of the Deva Thunthumi—a traditional percussion instrument unique to the tradition.

Dancers wear Salangai (ankle bells) on both legs, their movements creating a melodious symphony of sound. They hold a kerchief in each hand, using it to accentuate gestures and evoke divine energy.
