Taiko (太鼓) encompasses a wide variety of Japanese percussion instruments. Within Japan, this term generally refers to any type of drum; however, internationally it specifically denotes the various drums known as wadaiko (和太鼓, "Japanese drums") and the ensemble style of performance called kumi-daiko (組太鼓, "set of drums"). The construction process varies among manufacturers, with the preparation of both the drum body and skin potentially taking several years depending on the technique used.

Taiko holds a mythological place in Japanese folklore, though historical records indicate they were introduced to Japan via Korean and Chinese cultural influences as early as the 6th century CE. Some taiko instruments share similarities with those originating from India. Archaeological findings confirm their presence in Japan during the Kofun period of the 6th century. Throughout history, their roles have evolved significantly, ranging from communication, military commands, theatrical accompaniment, and religious ceremonies to festival celebrations and modern concert performances. In contemporary society, taiko plays a pivotal role in social movements for minorities both inside and outside Japan.

The kumi-daiko performance style, featuring an ensemble playing diverse drums, was pioneered by Daihachi Oguchi in 1951 and has since been sustained by groups such as Kodo. Other regional styles, like hachijō-daiko, have also developed within specific Japanese communities. Today, kumi-daiko ensembles are active globally, including in the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, and Brazil. Taiko performance involves numerous technical elements, including rhythm, form, stick grip, attire, and instrumentation. Ensembles typically utilize various barrel-shaped nagadō-daiko alongside smaller shime-daiko. Many groups complement the drumming with vocals, strings, and woodwind instruments.
