Application Description
PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulation on a 64-bit architecture has seen significant advancements, especially with the ARMv8-A architecture. This architecture, with its optional 64-bit "AArch64" and the "A64" instruction set, has brought new possibilities to the world of emulation. AArch64 ensures compatibility with the existing 32-bit "AArch32" / ARMv7-A architecture and the "A32" instruction set, making it ideal for running PS2 emulation software. While the 16-32bit Thumb instruction set ("T32") does not have a 64-bit counterpart, ARMv8-A still allows 32-bit applications to run smoothly within a 64-bit operating system and enables a 32-bit OS to operate under a 64-bit hypervisor. ARM introduced the Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A57 cores on October 30, 2012, and Apple was the first to incorporate an ARMv8-A compatible core, named Cyclone, into a consumer product.
