"Top Gun Director to Helm New Miami Vice Film"
Joseph Kosinski, renowned for directing Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly set to helm a new adaptation of the iconic series Miami Vice for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The screenplay for this much-anticipated film will be crafted by Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy, who will rework an initial draft penned by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has been notably involved in recent years, contributing to multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor, a project spearheaded by his brother, Tony Gilroy.
The original Miami Vice series, a groundbreaking NBC police drama, was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. Airing from 1984 to 1989, it starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs. The show's innovative style and aesthetic had a profound impact on television, setting a new standard for the visual and auditory elements of series programming.
Previously, Miami Vice was brought to the big screen in 2006 by Michael Mann, the creative mind behind films like Heat and Collateral. That adaptation featured Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles.
While details about the new film are currently sparse, it's confirmed that Miami Vice will not be Kosinski's immediate follow-up to his upcoming release F1, slated for June. This timeline allows Kosinski ample opportunity to immerse himself in the project and, perhaps humorously, decide on the perfect Ferrari to drive the film's aesthetic forward.
