Top 10 LitRPG Books to Read in 2025

Author : Anthony Update : Apr 15,2025

Reading is my all-time favorite hobby. While I enjoy playing video games and watching TV, nothing quite compares to immersing myself in a compelling book series. My journey into reading began with the enchanting world of Harry Potter, which sparked my love for literature. Over time, my reading interests have broadened to include sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and non-fiction. However, it was the discovery of the LitRPG genre that truly captivated me. My passion for LitRPG grew rapidly, and it's now the only type of reading I pursue. If you're curious about exploring this genre, here are my top recommendations to get you started.

One of the best aspects of these recommended books is their availability through a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Given the extensive number of books in some of these series, opting for a subscription can lead to significant savings each month. Additionally, all these titles are also accessible via an Audible subscription for those who prefer listening to their stories.

What Is LitRPG?

For newcomers to the genre, LitRPG stands for Literary Role-Playing Game. This genre blends storytelling with elements typically found in video games, such as leveling systems and skill progression. While some stories might involve characters being transported into a game-like world, the scope of LitRPG is much broader. Each book in my list incorporates a game-like structure, but not all adhere strictly to traditional video game mechanics. You'll find a mix of progression fantasy and LitRPG, both offering a similar immersive experience.

  1. He Who Fights with Monsters

Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters

95Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

He Who Fights with Monsters is a thrilling, action-packed series with some of the most memorable lines I've encountered. Set in a universe with a unique leveling system and compelling characters, it's essential reading for fans of fantasy comedy. This is my top LitRPG series, and each new installment continues to captivate just as much as the first.

The story follows Jason Asano, who finds himself in a magical world, waking up in a hedge maze with new powers and no hair. His determined yet quirky approach to his new reality helps him navigate encounters with cannibals, monsters, and complex personal relationships. Jason's morally complex character is both endearing and intriguing throughout the series.

Currently, He Who Fights with Monsters is on its 11th book, with more anticipated releases from the author, Shirtaloon.

  1. The Path of Ascension

### The Path of Ascension

33Book 1 of 8See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

The Path of Ascension deviates slightly from traditional LitRPG as the main character isn't transported to another world. Instead, it presents a richly detailed universe centered around magical dungeon portals called rifts and powerful immortals with unique talents.

The narrative follows Matt, a young orphan with dreams of diving into rifts to battle the monsters that killed his parents. When he discovers his seemingly detrimental Tier 1 talent, his aspirations are challenged. Matt's journey to overcome his limitations through hard work and determination is both inspiring and engaging.

While the first book hooked me, the character development in books two and three cemented this series as one of my favorites.

  1. Dungeon Crawler Carl

### Dungeon Crawler Carl

74Book 1 of 7See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

Dungeon Crawler Carl offers a fast-paced adventure that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The series features a refreshing protagonist and introduces Princess Donut, the cat who might just steal the show. It's a standout in the LitRPG genre.

The story revolves around Carl, who, along with his ex-girlfriend's cat, is thrust into an underground dungeon during an apocalyptic event. They must navigate an intergalactic game show run by advanced races and a quirky AI. The series is filled with humor, action, and skill progression, making it a must-read for fans.

With the seventh book released in 2024, the series retains its initial allure. Author Matt Dinniman's other works are also worth exploring if you enjoy his writing style.

  1. Unsouled (Cradle Series)

### Unsouled (Cradle Series)

32Book 1 of 12See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

Like The Path of Ascension, the Cradle series does not involve the main character being pulled into another universe. Instead, it immerses readers in a deeply developed world with a unique power cultivation system and a likable protagonist. Unsouled is a top pick for fantasy enthusiasts looking to dip their toes into LitRPG.

The story centers on Lindon, born as an "Unsouled" with no apparent path in the sacred arts. Despite his intelligence and determination, he seems destined for powerlessness. However, divine intervention provides him with a new path forward.

The series concludes satisfyingly with its 12th book. Will Wight's other works are also highly recommended for those who enjoy the Cradle series.

  1. Beware of Chicken

### Beware of Chicken

30Book 1 of 4See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

Beware of Chicken stands out for its unique premise. Unlike the action-heavy narratives of other series on this list, this story takes a more serene approach. It follows Jin Rou, a cultivator who, after dying, has his consciousness replaced by someone from Earth. Choosing peace over power, the new Jin Rou becomes a farmer, finding unexpected strength and joy in his new life.

This series offers a refreshing and relaxing read within the LitRPG genre, perfect for those seeking a gentler fantasy experience.

  1. Defiance of the Fall

### Defiance of the Fall

36Book 1 of 15See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

As the longest series on this list, Defiance of the Fall is a commitment that pays off richly. Starting with a gripping first book, the series maintains its momentum as the protagonist faces new challenges.

The narrative begins with Zachary Atwood, who finds himself alone when Earth integrates into the multiverse. Confronted by a new "System" with quests and notifications, Zac must survive an alien invasion with only a hatchet and his wits. His journey to reunite with his family unravels the mysteries of the multiverse.

With 14 books already published and a 15th on the way, the series offers a complex and engaging exploration of skill progression and multiversal secrets.

  1. Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

### Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)

30Book 1 of 5See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

The Arcane Ascension series focuses on a world governed by powerful, god-like beings who offer "attunements" to those who survive their dungeon-like spires. The intricate magic system is both captivating and educational as the protagonist, Corin Cadence, delves into it.

Corin's story begins after the loss of his brother to the Serpent Spire, leading him to face the trials within to earn his own attunement. His journey at Lorian Heights Academy uncovers more mysteries and forms new friendships.

This series was my gateway into LitRPG, offering a Harry Potter-esque magic school setting within a rich fantasy world. Andrew Rowe's companion series further enriches the main storyline, making it a great entry point into the genre.

  1. The Grand Game

### The Grand Game

15Book 1 of 9See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

For fans of stealth games, The Grand Game provides a thrilling LitRPG experience. The protagonist, Michael, finds himself in the Forever Kingdom with no memories except his name. He must navigate and survive a dungeon filled with monsters, honing his skills and uncovering the world controlled by the elite Powers.

With seven books released and two more available for preorder, The Grand Game offers a unique twist on the genre that I thoroughly enjoyed.

  1. The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

### The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)

30Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

The Completionist Chronicles are perfect for those new to LitRPG. The series incorporates traditional RPG elements with unique twists, making it an addictive read.

The story follows Joe, an ex-military medic now confined to a wheelchair, who enters a virtual MMORPG. As a Ritualist, he navigates quests to level up his magic and skills, eventually exploring new worlds in later books.

  1. Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)

23See it at AmazonSee it at Audible

The Underworld series takes a slower, more atmospheric approach to LitRPG. Elorian, a typical high school gamer, finds himself trapped in the underworld with other gamers, given magical powers and the ability to level up indefinitely. However, their captor, an ancient succubus, drains their power as they progress through dungeons filled with vampires, dragons, and other fantastical creatures.

This series is an excellent starting point for exploring the depths of LitRPG, filled with adventure and unique challenges.
