Sydney Sweeney Nears Deal for Role in Live-Action Gundam Film
Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in the HBO drama series "Euphoria," "The White Lotus," "Reality," "Anyone but You," and the recent superhero film "Madame Web," is reportedly in final negotiations to star in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, "Mobile Suit Gundam." This exciting development comes on the heels of the February announcement that Bandai Namco and Legendary have signed an agreement to co-finance the project, which is set to be directed and written by Kim Mickle, the showrunner of "Sweet Tooth."
While the film, which currently lacks an official title, has not yet disclosed its release window or plot details, a teaser poster has been released to build anticipation among fans. Variety was the first to report Sweeney's involvement, although specific details about her character and the storyline remain under wraps.
In addition to her burgeoning acting career, Sweeney has recently taken on a producing role. Last month, she was attached to star in and produce a film adaptation of a horror story originally posted on a Reddit thread, showcasing her versatility and growing influence in the industry.
Legendary and Bandai Namco have expressed their commitment to sharing more information as it becomes available, stating, "We plan to steadily announce details as they become finalized." They also provided some background on the "Mobile Suit Gundam" franchise, highlighting its significant impact on the anime genre since its debut in 1979. The series is credited with establishing the "real robot anime" genre, which moved away from the traditional good versus evil narratives to offer more realistic portrayals of war, detailed scientific explorations, and complex human dramas centered around the use of robots as "mobile suits."
