Surprise Cancellation: Dynasty Warriors 10 Scrapped

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor

Dynasty Warriors: Origins, launching January 17, 2025, boasts the series' signature hack-and-slash combat set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms period. However, the game's creation involved a surprising twist: the cancellation of its planned 10th mainline installment.

Omega Force, the development studio, revealed in an interview with 4Gamer (translated by SiliconEra) that technological advancements spurred this decision. The team, initially working on Dynasty Warriors 10, a stage-clearing game reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors 7, shifted gears upon witnessing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. The potential offered by modern hardware prompted a strategic overhaul, leading to the development of Origins.

While abandoning Dynasty Warriors 10 proved challenging, the team salvaged valuable elements. Producer Masamichi Oba highlighted the incorporation of free-roaming exploration, a feature initially envisioned for the canceled title. Furthermore, Origins benefits from a more in-depth narrative focusing on the Three Kingdoms' history. Producer Tomohiko Sho emphasized that the cancellation aimed to create the best possible Dynasty Warriors experience, leveraging the power of current-gen consoles to enhance gameplay. The result is a game that retains the series' core combat while integrating innovative features born from the ashes of its predecessor.
