Suikoden Fans Rejoice With the Announcement of a Suikoden 2 Anime...and a Brand New Mobile Gacha Game

This week, Konami surprised and delighted classic RPG fans with a Suikoden-centric livestream. The franchise’s absence of a new main entry for over a decade, following a Japan-only PSP side story, fueled high anticipation and a range of expectations. The announcements were met with a mixed reaction: a Suikoden anime (celebrated!), and a new mobile Suikoden game with gacha mechanics (less so).

Let's start with the anime, simply titled Suikoden: The Anime. Based on Suikoden II, it marks Konami animation's first production. Details remain scarce, including international availability, with only a brief scenery shot revealed:

This is exciting news for dedicated fans and potentially a great introduction for newcomers, provided wider accessibility.

The second announcement generated more complex feelings. A new game, Suikoden: Star Leap, was unveiled, boasting stunning visuals reminiscent of Octopath Traveler—2D sprites against 3D backgrounds. Set between Suikoden I and Suikoden V, it retains the series' signature 108 characters.

However, the mobile platform and gacha mechanics are a point of contention. While not necessarily a deal-breaker for die-hard fans, the monetization strategy contrasts sharply with the series' history of premium console and PC releases. The impact of this monetization on gameplay and the ability to collect all 108 characters remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars offers immediate gratification. A new trailer premiered during the livestream, and the collection launches tomorrow, March 6th.
