Starting Stardew Valley, you adopt a cat or dog. Previously, only one pet per save was allowed, but the 1.6 update (early 2024) changed that! To add more, you'll need to meet a few requirements.
First, maximize your current pet's friendship. This means daily water (using your Watering Can; rain/snow days are automatic) and a daily pet (look for the heart!). Check their friendship level in the "Animals" tab of the pause menu.

A full friendship meter triggers a message from Marnie about adopting more pets. If you skipped the initial pet, this happens at the start of Year 2.

For each new pet, visit Robin to craft Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood). These are essential; neglecting a pet can lead to them running away.

Optional decorative items like doghouses and cat trees are available at Marnie's.
