Sony Pulls First-Party PS3 Games Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 From PS5 and PS4 as Part of Big PS Plus Clearout

Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see the removal of 22 games from the service's library, including popular titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.

PlayStation Plus is an essential online gaming service for PlayStation users, offering a range of benefits including free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer access, and exclusive member discounts. Additionally, Extra and Premium members have access to a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games.

As reported by Push Square, these 22 games will be removed from the PlayStation Plus library on May 20, including two notable first-party Sony PS3 titles, which will no longer be available in the PS Plus Premium library.

The removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 is particularly significant, as these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store. This means that the PS Plus Premium streaming service represents the last opportunity to play them, unless you own the games and a functional PS3. Both titles were added to the library at the end of 2024 and are being removed less than a year later.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games, offers alternate history first-person shooter experiences. The studio, known for its work on Ratchet and Clank, released three Resistance games for the PS3 before shifting focus to projects like Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles.

While it's uncommon for Sony to remove first-party titles from PlayStation Plus, precedents exist, such as the unexpected removal of both Horizon gamesHorizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West — in August 2024. Unlike those titles, which remained available for purchase, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will become completely unavailable on modern consoles following their removal.

Interestingly, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be accessible through the service. Additionally, the more recent first-party PS4 game, InFamous: Second Son, is also set to leave PS Plus.

Insomniac's Resistance series has been on hiatus for a while. In February, Insomniac founder and outgoing president Ted Price disclosed that there was significant effort to develop Resistance 4, but the project never moved forward. Similar to Guerrilla's Killzone series, Resistance has been sidelined.
