Simpsons Producer: Key Character Death Not Canon

"The Simpsons" executive producer Matt Selman has clarified that a recent episode featuring a major character's death and its aftermath shouldn't be viewed as definitive canon - because the show fundamentally rejects the concept of canonical continuity.

Speaking about the Season 36 finale episode "Estranger Things," Selman indicated these events would probably never be mentioned again in future episodes.
