Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Set for Sooner Release, Writer Hints

Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, renowned for directing Deadpool & Wolverine, is still actively working on his upcoming Star Wars movie. The film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting that the project may be progressing faster than expected. "I am [excited] too," Tropper stated. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Details about Levy's Star Wars project remain largely under wraps, with one key fact being its setting post-The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified that the movie will be set in the future, specifically "post-[the first] nine," potentially five or six years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era, marking a new chapter in the Star Wars saga.

In discussions with Deadline, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. Additionally, it has been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star, adding another layer of anticipation for fans. With a release not expected until at least late 2026 or even 2027, patience will be key for eager viewers.

Since the release of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has been cautious about its Star Wars film projects, canceling several, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a planned trilogy by Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was also removed from Disney's schedule in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic movie directed by Dave Filoni, set within his Mando-verse; a Dawn of the Jedi film led by James Mangold; and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars endeavors, as reported by THR.

Moreover, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy that diverges from the Skywalker Saga. Fans won't have to wait too long for more Star Wars content, as Season 2 of Andor is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on April 22, kicking off with a triple premiere episode.
