The Last of Us Season 2 Will Feature 'Pretty Brutal' Content Cut From the Game

HBO's "The Last of Us" Season 2 will feature previously cut content from the game's sequel, according to showrunner Neil Druckmann. He revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will include "pretty brutal" scenes, notably elements from the "Lost Levels" partially restored in the PlayStation 5 remaster of The Last of Us Part II. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer a range of tones, from the relatively calmer party and boar hunt sequences to the intense horror of Ellie's encounter with monsters in the Seattle sewers.

Druckmann hinted that this restored content will be impactful, stating, "[It's] pretty brutal, but I'm very excited for people to see it." He also teased the appearance of a previously only mentioned character, drawing parallels to Season 1's inclusion of Frank.

Season 2 introduces numerous new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel. The addition of Catherine O'Hara in a currently undisclosed role adds another layer of intrigue.

With the premiere of Season 2 Episode 1 slated for April, answers to these mysteries are forthcoming. However, HBO plans to adapt The Last of Us Part II beyond a single season, unlike Season 1's complete adaptation of the first game. Showrunner Craig Mazin explained that Part II's extensive narrative necessitates this, and Season 2, despite its seven-episode run, will conclude with a "natural breakpoint," leaving the possibility of a Season 3 open.
