Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Standalone Status
Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining the Avengers or the X-Men, stating that such a move would signify the end of the character's journey. This comment comes in the wake of the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, where Deadpool's desire to join the Avengers was a central theme. Despite speculation that Marvel Studios might want to integrate the 'Merc with a Mouth' into the next Avengers film, Avengers: Doomsday, Reynolds seems to be steering the character in a different direction.
The cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday last month featured a significant number of veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This has led to speculation that the film might be setting up an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, known for his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X, appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, McKellen, who portrayed Magneto, along with Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops), have yet to appear in the MCU.
Despite the heavy X-Men presence in Avengers: Doomsday, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the cast list, although Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, was included. Reynolds emphasized that making Deadpool an Avenger or an X-Man would be akin to wish fulfillment, suggesting it's not the right path for the character. Instead, he hinted at a potential cameo role for Deadpool, similar to Wesley Snipes' well-received appearance as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Looking ahead, Reynolds is currently working on a new project that involves an ensemble cast, though he remains tight-lipped about the details. This could mean another Deadpool film with numerous cameos, possibly including characters like Snipes' Blade, Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23, all of whom appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As for Avengers: Doomsday, details beyond the cast list remain scarce. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, suggesting it will recapture the classic Marvel feeling. Other cast members like Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) have also shared their excitement. Recent set photo leaks have sparked further speculation among fans, particularly about the fate of the X-Men in the film.
There's also buzz about Oscar Isaac potentially appearing as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, fueled by his withdrawal from this month's Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has hinted that the cast revealed so far is not exhaustive, leaving room for more surprises.
With Reynolds steering Deadpool away from the Avengers and X-Men, fans can look forward to new and exciting directions for the character while eagerly anticipating the ensemble cast and potential cameos in upcoming projects.
