RuneScape: Dragonwilds has just sprung a surprise on its eager fans with the announcement of its early access release. During a captivating livestream on April 16, Jagex, the developers behind Dragonwilds, revealed that the game is now accessible for early access on Steam. This comes hot on the heels of its first trailer release, which was only a few weeks earlier.

The gaming community was taken aback as Dragonwilds had only recently opened for wishlisting on Steam on April 1 and showcased its initial gameplay teaser on April 2. Although the project was first hinted at in 2022, it wasn't until late 2024 that Jagex started inviting players to alpha test this new survival game within the RuneScape universe. The game's official unveiling as RuneScape: Dragonwilds occurred on March 31, 2025.

Estimated Official Release Date in Early 2026

The developers are setting their sights on an official release in early 2026. They've expressed their commitment to perfection, stating, "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure our players enjoy a complete, satisfying experience that they’ll want to revisit with friends time and again."

Jesse America, Jagex's Executive Producer, emphasized that Dragonwilds represents a fresh take on the RuneScape experience, crafted with the franchise's fans in mind. He noted that the early access phase marks the beginning of an exciting development journey.

He further elaborated, "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be rolling out regular updates with new content and features, while actively engaging with the community to shape an iconic open-world survival crafting game that resonates with both our dedicated RuneScape fans and newcomers alike."

Early Access Roadmap Revealed

Jagex has also shared the early access roadmap, offering a glimpse into the game's future during this period. A highlight of the upcoming updates is the introduction of a new region, Fellhollow, a haunting expanse teetering between life and death.

This eerie region is under the dominion of the soul-eater dragon, Imaru, influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld. Players will be joined by the iconic RuneScape character, Death, on this journey. Expect new quests, lore, gear, music, and skills in magic, ranged, and farming.

Additionally, the game will feature new Lesser Dragons as enemies, dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, a creative mode, and more. While specific release dates for these updates remain undisclosed, Jagex assures continuous enhancements to the game.

Players who jump into Dragonwilds during its early access phase will be rewarded with exclusive in-game items. As listed on the game’s Steam page, "Early Adopters" will receive:
