Ratchet & Clank Sequel Explored by Insomniac
Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for its Ratchet & Clank franchise, has signaled its intent to expand its presence in the film and television industry. This follows the recent retirement of founder and long-time CEO Ted Price. Co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider, in a recent interview with Variety, expressed the studio's keen interest in further game adaptations.
"We're definitely interested in more game-to-screen projects," Schneider stated, referencing the 2016 Ratchet & Clank film. "We had a head start with that one, and we're particularly fond of the Ratchet & Clank universe."
The 2016 film received mixed critical reception. However, with Sony's acquisition of Insomniac in 2019, and Sony's proven success with game adaptations like The Last of Us, Insomniac is optimistic about its future endeavors in this space.
Sony's Growing Portfolio of Game Adaptations
Insomniac's ambition aligns perfectly with Sony's ongoing success in translating its video game properties to the screen. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the critically acclaimed 2023 The Last of Us series.
At CES 2025, Sony unveiled further projects: The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025), an Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025), Ghost of Tsushima Legends (Crunchyroll, 2027), and upcoming feature films based on Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn, though release dates for the latter two remain unannounced.
Insomniac Founder Ted Price Retires After 30 Years
The news of Insomniac's future plans coincides with the announcement of Ted Price's retirement after three decades at the helm. Price, instrumental in creating iconic franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man, stated that his decision, made last year, was driven by a desire to allow new leadership to guide the studio.
Three veteran Insomniac employees – Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang – will now lead the studio as Co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in their abilities, emphasizing their deep understanding of Insomniac's culture and processes.
