Avowed's Companions: A Ranked Guide from Worst to Best

Beyond their narrative roles and dialogue, Avowed's Companions offer significant practical advantages, from pathfinding to combat prowess. This guide ranks every Avowed Companion from least to most effective.

  1. Marius

Marius in Avowed

Early game exploration benefits aside, Marius quickly becomes outclassed. His utility lies in item and plant discovery, but his combat capabilities are underwhelming. His abilities, detailed below, primarily focus on crowd control and weakening enemies, making him a niche choice:

  • Blinding Roots: Roots enemies (upgradeable to stun, trap multiple, and inflict Bleed).
  • Heart Seeker: Piercing shot that always hits (upgradeable for multi-target, increased damage vs. low health, and reduced cooldown).
  • Shadow Step: Vanishes and strikes an enemy (upgradeable for instant kills on stunned enemies, increased damage vs. low health, and multi-target strikes).
  • Wounding Shots: Inflicts Bleed Accumulation (upgradeable to reduce enemy damage reduction, slow enemies, and reduce enemy damage).

While effective against specific enemy types, especially when paired with a melee-focused Envoy, Marius lacks the overall power to justify his inclusion throughout most of the Living Lands.

  1. Giatta

Giatta in Avowed

Giatta, a support-oriented Animancer, excels in healing, shielding, and buffing the party. While her damage output is limited, her utility is invaluable in challenging encounters:

  • Purification: Heals allies (upgradeable for increased healing, enemy interruption, and increased ally damage reduction).
  • Barrier: Provides allies with a temporary health shield (upgradeable for increased shield strength, healing on expiration, and self-protection).
  • Acceleration: Boosts ally movement and attack speed (upgradeable for damage reduction, extended duration, and ability cooldown reduction).
  • Reconstruction: Heals allies with attacks (upgradeable for increased healing of low-health allies, temporary health grants, and ally revival on enemy kills).

Giatta also activates Essence Generators, opening up late-game areas. Her synergy with magic-focused Envoy builds makes her a valuable asset.

  1. Kai

Kai in Avowed

Despite being an early recruit, Kai remains helpful throughout the game. A robust tank, he delivers substantial damage with minimal player intervention:

  • Fire and Ire: Blunderbuss attack with high stun and taunt (upgradeable for ignite, increased stun, and reduced cooldown).
  • Unbending Defense: Regenerates health and increases damage reduction (upgradeable for increased damage reduction, increased health regeneration, and an area-of-effect shockwave on expiration).
  • Leap of Daring: Stunning area-of-effect attack with taunt (upgradeable for increased area of effect, temporary health per hit, and bonus attack damage per hit).
  • Second Wind: Self-revival (upgradeable for increased health restoration, attack speed burst, and ability cooldown reset).

His abilities are potent against various enemy types, offering both single-target and crowd control options. His self-revival further enhances his effectiveness. He also uses fire to clear obstacles.

  1. Yatzli

Yatzli in Avowed

Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, delivers high damage and excellent crowd control. She's the closest thing to air support in the Living Lands:

  • Essence Explosion: Explosive arcane damage (upgradeable for increased blast radius, fire accumulation, and reduced cooldown).
  • Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Volley of homing arcane missiles (upgradeable for increased fire rate, range, and shock accumulation).
  • Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies (upgradeable for increased slow, area-of-effect slow, and frost accumulation).
  • Blast: Area-of-effect burst damage on enemy hits (upgradeable for explosive damage to break obstacles, increased stun, and status effect chances).

Her potent abilities and obstacle-clearing capabilities make her a top-tier companion, despite being the last recruit.

Avowed launches on PC and Xbox on February 18.
