The Pokémon Company is responding to significant shortages of its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, as reported by IGN on January 16, 2025. The unexpected high demand has impacted product availability, causing difficulties for fans seeking to purchase the new set.

A Pokémon Company spokesperson acknowledged the issue, stating they are working at maximum capacity to increase production and address the shortage as quickly as possible. While fans may experience delays, the company assures them of its commitment to restoring optimal stock levels.

Impact on Retailers:

The scarcity of Prismatic Evolutions was first highlighted by PokeBeach, a Pokémon TCG fan website, on January 4, 2025. The report indicated that US retailers, particularly smaller, local stores, are disproportionately affected. According to Deguire, owner of Player 1 Services in Maryland, the influx of orders from stores not typically stocking Pokémon products has strained distribution channels. Distributors responded by limiting supplies to local retailers by 10-15%, prioritizing larger chains like GameStop and Target. This allocation strategy, while aiming for broader distribution, has exacerbated the shortage for smaller businesses.

The shortage has already led to inflated prices on the secondary market. The Elite Trainer Box, yet to be officially released, is reportedly selling for $127 USD, significantly above its $55 retail price. However, this price gouging is expected to subside once the Pokémon Company increases supply.

Expansion Details and Release Schedule:

Announced on November 1, 2024, and launched on January 17, 2025, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new special illustration rare cards, ultra rare Supporter cards, and reprints of popular cards with new artwork. Notable additions include Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and Roaring Moon ex, featuring artwork by Yukihiro Tada and Shinji Kanda respectively.

Additional products, including the Surprise Box and Mini Tin (featuring Eevee and its evolutions), are slated for release on February 7, 2025, followed by the Booster Bundle and Pouch Special Collection on March 7 and April 25, 2025, respectively. A digital version of the set became available on Pokémon TCG Live on January 16, 2025.
