Pokémon Go Director on Scopely: No Need for Fan Concern
Following the recent acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the creators of Monopoly Go, fans have expressed a range of concerns including fears over data privacy and the potential increase in ads. However, a recent interview with Michael Steranka, a product director for Pokémon Go, published on Polygon, aims to alleviate these worries.
In the interview, Steranka speaks highly of Scopely and assures that both companies share similar values. He confidently stated that intrusive ads would not be introduced into Pokémon Go under Scopely's ownership. Addressing data privacy concerns, Steranka was firm in his assertion that Niantic would not share or sell player data to third parties. He concluded by emphasizing that the acquisition would have minimal impact on Niantic's operations, suggesting that fans should expect business as usual.
If it ain't broke... While there's a natural concern about corporate influence, I believe Scopely will not heavily interfere with Pokémon Go's successful operations. The game has been, and continues to be, a major success, and the focus for Scopely might be more on Niantic's new AR development team rather than altering the core game.
Steranka also highlighted the close collaboration with The Pokémon Company in the decision-making process for Pokémon Go. This partnership implies that any actions not aligned with The Pokémon Company's standards are unlikely to be implemented now or in the future.
