People Are Streaming Assassin's Creed Shadows a Month Ahead of Its Official Release Date

Assassin's Creed Shadows, slated for release on March 20, 2025, has suffered a significant leak. Gameplay footage and images have surfaced online via social media and streaming platforms, a month ahead of its official launch. The leaks originated from copies allegedly purchased from an online marketplace and subsequently listed on a U.S. auction site, where multiple copies sold for $100 each. While streaming services are actively removing the leaked content, the damage is done.

This leak presents a considerable challenge for Ubisoft, a company already facing difficulties with the title. Despite the setbacks, Ubisoft has consistently maintained strong preorder numbers, comparing them favorably to Assassin's Creed Odyssey. CEO Yves Guillemot highlighted positive early previews, praising the narrative, immersive experience, and the dual protagonist approach. He commended the development team's dedication to delivering the franchise's most ambitious installment yet.

The game's journey to its March 20th release has been turbulent. Initially planned for November, it faced two delays, first to February 14th, and then to its current date. The pressure is immense, as Assassin's Creed Shadows represents not only the long-awaited Japan-set entry and the first full Assassin's Creed game since 2020, but also a crucial title for a struggling Ubisoft facing investor concerns following recent underperforming releases.

The promotional campaign has been far from smooth. The developers issued apologies for historical inaccuracies in the game's depiction of Japan and for unauthorized use of a historical recreation group's flag. Further controversy arose when collectible figure maker PureArts withdrew an Assassin's Creed Shadows statue due to its deemed "insensitive" design.
